WHAT IS A PROSTHODONTIST?

Prosthodontists complete three additional years of advanced specialty training beyond dental school, with an emphasis on restoring and replacing teeth, dental implants, esthetics, occlusion, and complex rehabilitation. This advanced training provides a comprehensive understanding of how teeth, implants, function, and facial esthetics work together, particularly when treatment involves multiple areas of the mouth or requires extensive reconstruction

A LEGACY OF PROSTHODONTICS, REIMAGINED

The practice’s prosthodontic roots date back to 1987, when it was established in Austin as Smile Harbour. In 2005, the practice moved to its current location in Northwest Hills, Austin, continuing its focus on prosthodontic and restorative care.

In 2021, Dr. Rad acquired the practice and re-envisioned its future as Smile Boutique Implant Center, a modern, digitally integrated boutique center dedicated to complex restorative dentistry, implant prosthodontics, and full-arch rehabilitation. Today, Smile Boutique blends decades of prosthodontic legacy with advanced digital workflows, an in-house dental laboratory, and highly personalized specialist care.

With this foundation, Dr. Rad brings a modern, comprehensive approach to prosthodontic care.

HARVARD-tRAINED PROSTHODONTIST

Dr. Afsaneh Andrea Rad, D.M.D., M.Sc., M.M.Sc., is a Harvard-trained prosthodontist with more than two decades of experience in restorative and prosthodontic care. Her advanced training spans prosthodontics, implant dentistry, esthetics, occlusion, and temporomandibular disorders.

She brings this foundation to complex restorative dentistry, full-mouth restoration and rehabilitation, and implant-supported full-arch treatment, approaching esthetics and function as interconnected parts of the same treatment plan.

pUBLISHED rESEARCHER

Dr. Rad’s academic work has included research at Harvard and MIT, with a focus on biomaterials, bone regeneration, and the biologic foundations of implant and restorative care. Her research has been published in peer-reviewed scientific literature and recognized during her advanced specialty training. That scientific background continues to influence how she evaluates complex treatment today, with attention to evidence, biology, material behavior, and long-term predictability rather than treatment based on appearance alone.

BEYOND RESTORING TEETH

For Dr. Rad, prosthodontic treatment is not simply about replacing missing or damaged teeth. Complex restorative care can change how a person eats, speaks, functions, smiles, and feels in everyday life. Her approach is highly individualized. She works closely with each patient to understand not only the clinical problem, but also the person behind it, then develops treatment that balances esthetics, function, biology, and long-term maintainability.

AN EYE FOR DESIGN

Dr. Rad’s appreciation for design extends beyond dentistry. With a longstanding interest in architecture and interiors, she personally shaped the design of Smile Boutique, creating a space where natural materials, proportion, detail, and function come together with intention. That same sensibility influences her approach to prosthodontics. She believes esthetics and function should be designed together, with careful attention to proportion, materials, texture, and the individual. The goal is not a standardized smile, but a result that feels natural, considered, and distinctly your own.

Outside the practice, Dr. Rad enjoys Austin’s architecture, food, and culture, traveling, and spending time with Romeo, Smile Boutique’s Director of First Impressions.

mEET ROMEO

Afsaneh Andrea Rad D.M.D., M.Sc., M.M.Sc.

Romeo, our goldendoodle and Director of First Impressions, has been part of Smile Boutique since he was 10 weeks old. His affectionate, playful personality brings a little warmth to the office and often helps patients feel more at ease.

A FAMILIAR FACE AT SMILE BOUTIQUE:

Romeo loves greeting familiar patients and meeting new ones. During treatment, he knows when it is time to leave the clinical work to the professionals, but he is usually happy to make an appearance before or afterward.

HERE FOR YOU:

Romeo’s company is always optional. For patients who enjoy having him nearby, he is happy to provide a little companionship. For those who prefer a dog-free visit, we make sure he stays comfortably away.
